Dress to impress… or not?

Whether you adore dressing up or dread the thought of packing a ballgown, cruise ship dress codes have become one of the most hotly discussed topics among new and seasoned cruisers alike.

And if you’re wondering where things currently stand ..... The tide is turning.

While some cruise lines still offer traditional formal evenings, others are leaning into a new era of comfort,

flexibility, and personal style — letting you shine in sequins or sneakers.

Here’s everything you need to know before you pack that sparkly number or leave the tie at home…

The evolution of elegance

Regent Seven Seas Cruises made headlines this summer by announcing that refined jeans and sneakers are now perfectly acceptable evening wear in most venues — a nod to changing expectations and the evolving definition of elegance.

And they’re not the only ones. Seabourn and Crystal Cruises now allow stylish, tear-free jeans in the evening, while Silversea continues to hold a slightly firmer line, asking guests to avoid denim and trainers after 6pm.

As Wes D’Silva of Regent said, “People are leaning toward a style that’s polished and sophisticated but also comfortable.”

Even luxury travellers are welcoming the shift — including boomers, not just the younger set — and it’s making cruise holidays feel more inclusive than ever before.

A more relaxed reality

Travel advisors and seasoned cruisers agree that, even on ships with dress codes, enforcement is often relaxed. Cruise lines are quietly observing guest preferences and adapting over time. The result? You’re more likely to see a broad mix of styles onboard — from sharp suits to floaty frocks, sparkly tops to smart-casual separates.

And that’s one of the reasons I love Virgin Voyages so much. You can dress up or down, and no one bats an eyelid. Every look is welcome, whether you’re glammed up in sequins or heading to dinner in trainers. There’s no pressure, just personal choice — and that freedom makes it feel truly modern.

But don’t ditch the heels just yet…

Of course, many cruisers love the opportunity to dress to the nines — and if you’re one of them, you’ll still find cruise lines that celebrate glamour and tradition.

  • Cunard is famous for its formal Gala Evenings, often themed, where tuxedos and evening gowns take centre stage.

  • Silversea and P&O Cruises continue to offer formal nights on many sailings.

  • Ambassador Cruise Line also encourages guests to embrace the joy of dressing up at least once per cruise, with celebratory evenings on longer voyages.

So if that’s your vibe — pack the sparkle! You’ll be in excellent company.

So what should you pack?

Ultimately, it comes down to knowing your cruise line — and what kind of experience you want. Some ships feel like floating five-star hotels, others like chic boutique resorts, and some are more laid-back with a touch of glitz.

And of course, there’s always room for both...Because the best kind of style is the one that makes you feel confident.
