Reflections from the CLIA Conference

If you’re serious about cruising, there’s one event that should be on your radar—the CLIA Conference. CLIA (the Cruise Lines International Association) is the body that represents the global cruise industry, ensuring high standards in sustainability, guest experience, and staff wellbeing. For travel agents like me, it also means keeping our knowledge up to date—through annual exams, ship visits, and staying closely connected to what’s happening across the cruise world.
This year’s theme was "Beyond Expectations", and I can honestly say—it was just that. I laughed, I hade tears in my eyes (more than once!), and I left feeling not just informed, but inspired.

We heard from cruise line leaders including Paul Ludlow of P&O Cruises, learned about the growing importance of luxury and value (spoiler alert: it’s not all about the cheapest deal), and listened to a brilliant keynote from Olympic rower James Cracknell, who spoke candidly about resilience, reinvention, and pushing through when life knocks you sideways.
There was also a fantastic trade show, where I got to spend time with suppliers who genuinely care about solo cruisers—some even asked me for tips on how they could do more. Music to my ears!
I also had the chance to tour two beautiful ships that sail directly from the UK—Oceania Vista and Sky Princess. Very different in style, but both elegant, welcoming, and full of thoughtful touches I know my clients will love. I’ll be sharing more on both soon.
But what stayed with me most wasn’t just the sessions, or the ships, or even the suppliers—it was something I hadn’t noticed until I sat down to reflect.
Some of the cruise lines I admire most—the ones that really look after their guests and their teams—are led by women. Women like Kristin Karst, co-founder of AmaWaterways, whom I was lucky enough to meet in Budapest earlier this year. Kristin radiates warmth, energy, and passion. She’s built AmaWaterways into a world-class river cruise brand by putting people first—guests, staff, and partners alike. She listens, innovates, and leads with heart. And her story? From growing up in East Germany, to leaving a secure career to launch a cruise line as a young mum—it’s nothing short of inspiring.
And then there’s Dondra Ritzenthaler, newly appointed CEO of Azamara Cruises. Dondra is known throughout the industry as a fierce advocate for travel advisors and a champion for ethical leadership. Her reputation for integrity, empathy, and excellence has made her not just a leader—but a role model. Her career spans decades, and her heart-led, people-first style has shaped the culture of some of cruising’s most respected brands.
It struck me just how powerful that is—these women aren’t just running cruise lines. They’re changing what leadership looks and feels like in an industry that’s often been seen as male-dominated. And perhaps it’s no coincidence that the cruise lines they lead are the ones known for their thoughtful service, deep care, and extraordinary guest loyalty.
What pleases me most is this: at the very top of these organisations are women who bring their full selves to the role. Women who show that you can lead with strength and softness, strategy and soul—and create something truly exceptional.
What made the whole experience even more powerful was stepping onboard two ships that truly bring these values to life: Oceania Vista and Sky Princess. I spent time exploring every corner—from the food and staterooms to the atmosphere onboard—and I left with a deeper understanding of what sets each line apart. I’ve shared my first-hand impressions over in the Facebook group, so if you're curious about which ship might suit your next adventure, do take a look!

Discovering Oceania Cruises — Luxury by Choice
If you’ve ever dreamed of sailing in relaxed luxury — with exquisite food, beautiful surroundings, and itineraries that feel like they were designed just for you — then let me gently introduce you to Oceania Cruises.
They’re not a name that’s shouted from the rooftops, but once you discover them… you’ll understand why so many travellers become loyal fans. Oceania is all about balance: not stuffy, not flashy — just wonderfully refined and refreshingly calm.
The Feel Onboard
Think of it as a floating boutique hotel with a gentle, grown-up pace. The ships are mid-sized (not mega, not tiny), so they still offer plenty of space, but without the bustle. You’ll find elegant lounges, art-filled corners, and welcoming spaces to read, sip a drink, or simply watch the world go by.
There’s no climbing wall, no waterpark, no late-night party deck — and that’s exactly the point. Oceania is for those who want to travel well and rest well, not rush from one thing to the next.
The Food
This is where Oceania truly shines. Their slogan — “The Finest Cuisine at Sea” — isn’t just a tagline, it’s a promise. And from what I’ve seen (and tasted!), it’s absolutely true.
Michelin-level dining across multiple restaurants, plus a true commitment to culinary experiences that reflect the destinations. The menus feel curated, not mass-produced. If you’re a foodie at heart — or simply love to be looked after — this part alone is worth the sailing.

The Itineraries
Oceania travellers tend to be curious souls — people who love to learn, explore, and discover. Their itineraries reflect that: rich with overnights, lesser-known ports, and a real sense of journey.
This is not “tick-box cruising.” It’s about depth. Whether you’re drawn to the Mediterranean, Asia, South America or the South Pacific — you’ll find routes that feel intentional and immersive.
Who It’s For
Oceania tends to attract travellers in midlife and beyond who want:
Comfort without excess
Exceptional food
Thoughtful itineraries
A relaxed, grown-up onboard atmosphere
Solo travellers are welcomed too, with occasional low-supplement offers and a quietly inclusive energy onboard.
Final Thoughts (From Me to You)
Oceania isn’t for everyone — and that’s what makes it so special. It’s for those who want to feel at ease while seeing the world. Who value quality over quantity. Who want to come home from a cruise feeling nourished — body, mind, and soul.

Sky Princess — Classic Comfort, Elevated Elegance
If you’ve ever dreamed of that just right kind of cruise — where the ship feels big enough to have all the bells and whistles, but not so overwhelming you feel lost — then Sky Princess might be the ship for you.
She’s one of Princess Cruises’ Royal-class ships, and to me, she strikes a beautiful balance between timeless and modern. There’s a quiet confidence about her — nothing over-the-top, just elegant spaces, friendly service, and plenty of ways to relax and enjoy the journey.
The Onboard Experience
Sky Princess has that unmistakable Princess charm — calm, polished, and spacious. From the moment you step onboard, you’ll feel the gentle hum of a ship that knows exactly who she’s for.
Expect:
Wide open decks with lots of room to breathe
Adults-only areas (hello, Sanctuary!) for true relaxation
Beautiful atriums and lounges with live music
A peaceful, grown-up energy that feels both relaxed and refined
An international mix of guests, which adds to the warm, inclusive atmosphere onboard
There’s plenty to do — movies under the stars, West End-style shows, a spa, wine tastings — but it’s never loud or rushed. You can take as much or as little as you like.
Dining
Princess always delivers when it comes to food, and Sky Princess is no exception.
You’ll find:
Multiple main dining rooms with classic dishes and new favourites
Speciality dining options like Crown Grill (steaks, oh yes) and Sabatini’s (for pasta lovers!)
Casual spots like the World Fresh Marketplace and Alfredo’s Pizzeria — great for a solo lunch or laid-back evening
OceanNow app service — so you can have snacks, drinks, or even room service delivered wherever you are
It’s easy, it’s flexible, and you’re never short of choice.
Who It’s Great For
Sky Princess is ideal for:
Couples, solo travellers, and friends looking for a classic cruising experience
First-time cruisers who want quality without being overwhelmed
Return guests who want something familiar but not dated
Anyone who loves thoughtful service, a good show, and a ship that feels like home by day two
Solo travellers will be pleased to know the ship feels welcoming — and while there aren’t dedicated solo cabins, the vibe is relaxed enough that you won’t feel out of place anywhere onboard.
Where She Sails
Sky Princess often sails the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Caribbean, with itineraries ranging from short getaways to longer, immersive journeys. She’s a great choice for those looking for variety and ease, especially with departures from Southampton.
Final Thoughts
Sky Princess isn’t flashy — she’s elegant. She’s not cutting-edge tech — she’s classically beautiful with smart touches. And if you’re looking for a cruise that feels polished, peaceful, and welcoming, she might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.
To Sum Up
As I left the conference, I felt a renewed sense of hope—not just for the future of cruising, but for the kind of world we’re building as travellers, leaders, and explorers. A world where solo travellers are seen and valued, where care and connection are part of every journey, and where women at the helm are showing us all what’s possible when we lead with heart. Whether you're dreaming of a river cruise, a solo sea adventure, or simply feeling your way back into travel, I hope this little window into the CLIA world inspires you as much as it inspired me.
